Ancient History of Rajasthan Period, up to 1200 AD Rajput clans emerged and held their sway over different parts of Rajasthan from about 700 AD. Before that, Rajasthan was a part of several republics. It was a part of the Mauryan Empire. Other major republics that dominated this region include the Malavas, Arjunyas, Yaudhyas, Kushans, Saka Satraps, Guptas, and Hunas.

The Rajput clan’s ascendancy in Indian history was during the period from the eighth to the twelfth century AD. The Pratihars ruled Rajasthan and most of northern India during 750-1000 AD. Between 1000-1200 AD, Rajasthan witnessed the struggle for supremacy between Chalukyas, Parmars, and Chauhans.

  • On the bank of river Kothari in Bhilwara District.
  • A most ancient source of animal husbandry is found here.

ii. Tilwara

  • On the bank of river Luni in Barmer district.
  • Evidence of animal husbandry is found here.
  • Excavated by Virendranath Mishra.

Chalcolithic Age of Rajasthan

Ahar Culture

  • Also known as Banas Culture.
  • 6 hearthstone is found from a single home which shows the evidence of joint families living under the same roof.
  • Black and Red Ware pottery were found here.
  • Other important sites were Gilund, Balathal, Pachamta, etc.

Indus Valley Civilization of Rajasthan

  1. Kalibangan
  • Located on the bank of river Ghaghhar in Hanumangarh District.
  • Discovered by Amlanand Ghosh in 1953.
  • Excavated by Brijvasilal in 1961.
  • Evidence of ploughed field is found.
  • Evidence of growing Barley and Mustard are found.
  • Cylindrical seal of Mesopotamia is found here.
  • Houses were made from Raw bricks (Kachhi Int).
  • The drainage system was not properly developed.
  • Evidence of Earthquake.
  1. Sothi (Sothi Civilization)
  • It was a rural civilization.
  • Located in Ganganagar District.
  • Situated on the plain of Ghaghhar and Chautang River.
  • It is also called Kalibanga 1st.
  • Historian mentioned it as the origin place of Harappan civilization.

Mahajanapadas of Rajasthan

  1. Matsya
  • Capital: – Viratnagar
  • Present: – Alwar, Bharatpur and Jaipur
  1. Shurasena (Brajmandala)
  • Capital: – Mathura
  • Present: – Alwar, Bharatpur, Dhaulpur and Karauli.

  • Capital: – Indraprastha (Delhi)
  • Present: – Delhi and northern Region of Rajasthan.

Shivi Janapada

  • Capital: – Madhyamika (Present name Nagari)
  • Present region: – Chittorgarh And Udaipur district
  • Rajasthan’s first excavated site.
  • Excavated by D.R. Bhandarkar.

Arjunayana Janapada

  • Present Alwar and Bharatpur District.
  • They emerged as political power During Sunga Period.

Malav Janapad

  • Present Jaipur and Tonk district.
  • Capital: – Nagar (Tonk)
  • They are mentioned in Mahabhashya of Patanjali

Yaudheyas

  • Present Hanumangarh and Ganganagar district.
  • Kushana power was stopped by them.
  • They are mentioned in Ashtadhyayi and Ganapatha of Panini.

Shalvya

  • Present Alwar district.

Rajanya

  • Present Jodhpur and Bikaner region.

Mauryan Period

  1. Bairat (Viratnagar)
  • It was capital of Matsya Mahajanapada.
  • It was a part of the Mauryan Empire.
  • In 1837, Ashoka’s Rock Edict was discovered by Capt. Burj from Bijak-ki-Pahadi.
  • Evidence of the Buddhist stupa sites was found.
  • In 634 A.D Huang Tsang visited Bairat.
  • Sculptures, coins, pottery, seals and metal objects were found from the excavation.
  • It was excavated by Daya Ram Sahni in 1936.
  • According to Maan Sarovar inscription of 713 A.D., Maan Maurya was the ruler of Bairat. This inscription also mentions the name of 4 rulers. Maheshwar, Bhoj, Bhim and Maan.

Post Mauryan Period

  • Greek ruler Menander attacked Rajasthan in 150 B.C.
  • 16 Greek coins were found from Bairat.
  • Coins were found from the Rang Mahal of Hanumangarh belonging to the Kushan period.
  • The first Saka king in India was Maues who ruled in Gandhar and extended his power in northwest India.

Gupta Period

  • According to Prayag Prashashthi (Allahabad Inscription), Samundragupta defeated many republican kingdoms.
  • Samundra Gupta defeated Rudradaman II in 351 A.D. and captured southern Rajasthan.
  • Vikramaditya Defeated last Shaka ruler and whole Rajasthan came under Gupta dynasty.
  • Maximum Gupta period coins are found from Bayana (Bharatpur) belonging to Kumar Gupta.
  • Baran(Rajasthan) inscription mention about Gupta.
  • Durga Temple (Kota) and Shiv Temple (Chachanura) are the best examples of Gupta architecture.

Post Gupta Period (Huns, Vardhan and Gurjars)

  • In 503 A.D, Toranmal of Hun Dynasty defeated Guptas and captured Rajasthan.
  • Mihirkula built Shiva temple in Badauli.
  • Later Mihikula was defeated by Narsingh Baladitya Gupta and Rajasthan was reoccupied by Guptas.
  • The capital of Gurjar-Pratihar was Bhinmal.
  • Chinese traveller Huang Tsang visited Bhinmal during his period.
  • Brahmagupta belongs to Bhinmal.
  • Gurjar Pratihar stopped Arab invasion from North West.

पाषाण युग

i. बागोर

  • यह भिलावाड़ा जिले में कोठारी नदी के किनारे स्थित।
  • यहां पशुपालन का सबसे प्राचीन स्रोत पाया जाता है।
  • बड़ी संख्या में औजारों के लिए खुदाई की जाती है।
  • वीरेन्द्रनाथ मिश्रा द्वारा उत्खनन किया जाता है।
  • यह भारत में सबसे बड़ा मध्यपाषाण युग का स्थल है।

ii. तिलवारा

  • यह बाड़मेर जिले में लूनी नदी के किनारे स्थित है।
  • पशुपालन के प्रमाण यहां पाए जाए हैं।
  • वीरेन्द्रनाथ मिश्रा द्वारा उत्खनन किया जाता है।

3. ताम्र पाषाण युग

i. आहर संस्कृति

  • इसे बनास संस्कृति के रूप में भी जाना जाता है।
  • यहां एक ही घर से 6 चूल्हे पाए गए थे जो यह प्रमाणित करता है कि एक ही छत के नीचे लोग संयुक्त परिवार के रूप में रहते थे।
  • काली एवं लाल मिट्टी के बर्तन यहां पाए गए।
  • अन्य महत्वपूर्ण स्थल गिलुंड, बालाथल, पछमता आदि थे।

सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता

  1. कालीबंगा
  • यह हनुमानगढ़ जिले में घग्गर नदी के किनारे स्थित है।
  • वर्ष 1953 में अमालानंद घोष द्वारा इसकी खोज की गई थी।
  • वर्ष 1961 में ब्रिजवासीलाल द्वारा इसकी खुदाई की गई थी।
  • यहां जुते हुए क्षेत्र के साक्ष्य पाए जाते हैं।
  • यहां जौ और सरसों के उगाए जाने के प्रमाण पाए जाते हैं।
  • मेसोपोटामिया की बेलनाकार मोहर यहां पाई गई।
  • यहां कच्ची ईंटों से बने घर पाए गए।
  • यहां जल-निकासी प्रणाली ठीक से विकसित नहीं हुई थी।
  • भूकंप के प्रमाण यहां पाए गए।
  1. सोथी (सोथी सभ्यता)
  • यह एक ग्रामीण सभ्यता थी।
  • यह गंगानगर जिले में स्थित था।
  • घग्गर और चौटांग नदी के मैदान पर स्थित था।
  • इसे कालीबंगा प्रथम के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।
  • इतिहासकार ने इसे हड़प्पा सभ्यता की उत्पत्ति के रूप में वर्णित किया है।

महाजनपद काल

राजस्थान के महाजनपद

  • राजधानी: – मथुरा

  • राजधानी: – इंद्रप्रस्थ (दिल्ली)
  • वर्तमान: – दिल्ली और राजस्थान का उत्तरी क्षेत्र
  1. राजस्थान के कुछ अन्य जनपद

i. शिवी जनपद

  • राजधानी: – माध्यामिका (वर्तमान नाम नागरी)
  • वर्तमान क्षेत्र: – चित्तौड़गढ़ और उदयपुर जिला
  • राजस्थान का पहला खुदाई स्थल
  • डी.आर. भंडारकर द्वारा उत्खनन।

ii. अर्जुनायन जनपद

  • वर्तमान अलवर और भरतपुर जिला
  • वे सुंगा अवधि के दौरान राजनीतिक शक्ति के रूप में उभरे।

iii. मालव जनपद

  • वर्तमान जयपुर और टोंक जिला
  • राजधानी: – नगर (टोंक)
  • इनका पतंजलि के महाभाष्य में उल्लेख किया गया है।

iv. यौद्धेय

  • वर्तमान हनुमानगढ़ और गंगानगर जिला।
  • कुशना शक्ति इनके द्वारा समाप्त कर दी गई।
  • इनका उल्लेख पाणिनी के अष्टधायी और गणपाठ में है।

v. शाल्व

  • वर्तमान अल्वर जिला
  • राज्न्य
  • वर्तमान जोधपुर और बीकानेर क्षेत्र

मौर्य काल

  1. बैराट (विराटनगर)
  • यह मत्स्य महाजनपद की राजधानी थी।
  • यह मौर्य साम्राज्य का एक हिस्सा था।
  • वर्ष 1837 में, बिजक-की-पहाड़ी से अशोक के शिला अध्यादेश की खोज कप्तान बर्ज ने की थी।
  • बौद्ध स्तूप स्थलों के प्रमाण पाए गए।
  • 634 ईसवी में हुआंग त्सांग ने बैराट का दौरा किया।
  • उत्खनन से मूर्तियां, सिक्के, मिट्टी के बर्तनों, मोहर और धातु की वस्तुएं पाई गईं।
  • वर्ष 1936 में दया राम साहनी द्वारा खुदाई की गई थी।
  • 713 ईसवी के मान सरोवर शिलालेख के अनुसार, मान मौर्य बैराट का शासक था। इस शिलालेख में 4 शासकों के नामों का भी उल्लेख किया गया है- महेश्वर, भोज, भीम और मान।

मौर्य काल के बाद

  • यूनानी शासक मिनेंडर ने 150 ईसा पूर्व राजस्थान पर हमला किया।
  • 16 यूनानी सिक्के बैराट से पाए गए थे।
  • कुशान अवधि में हनुमानगढ़ के रंग महल से यह सिक्के पाए गए।
  • भारत में पहला शक राजा माउज़ था जिसने गंधर्व में शासन किया और उत्तर-पश्चिम भारत में अपनी शक्ति का विस्तार किया ।

गुप्तकाल

  • प्रयाग प्रष्षठी (इलाहाबाद अभिलेख) के अनुसार, समन्द्रगुप्त ने कई गणराज्य राज्यों को हराया।
  • समन्द्रगुप्त ने 351 ईसवी में रुद्रप्रमन द्वितीय को हराया और दक्षिणी राजस्थान पर कब्जा किया।
  • विक्रमादित्य ने आखिरी शक शासक को हराया और पूरा राजस्थान गुप्त वंश के अधीन हो गया।
  • गुप्त काल के अधिकतम सिक्के कुमार गुप्त के बयाना (भरतपुर) से मिला है।
  • बारन (राजस्थान) शिलालेख गुप्त के बारे में उल्लेख करते हैं।
  • दुर्गा मंदिर (कोटा) और शिव मंदिर (चाचणुरा) गुप्त वास्तुकला का सबसे अच्छा उदाहरण हैं।

गुप्त काल के बाद (हुवर्धन और गुज्जर)

  • 503 ईसवी में, हुन राजवंश के तोरणमल ने गुप्ता को हराया और राजस्थान पर कब्जा कर लिया।
  • मिहिकुला ने बदाली में शिव मंदिर का निर्माण किया।
  • बाद में मिहिकुला को नरसिंह बलदित्य गुप्ता ने हराया और राजस्थान में फिर से गुप्तवंश का शासन हुआ।
  • गुर्जर-प्रतिहार की राजधानी भिनमल थी।
  • चीनी यात्री हुआंग त्संग ने अपनी अवधि के दौरान भिनमल का दौरा किया।
  • ब्रह्मगुप्त भिनमल से संबंध रखता है।
  • गुर्जर प्रतिहार ने उत्तर पश्चिम से अरब आक्रमण को समाप्त किया।

  • झुनझुनी जिले में कांटाली नदी के किनारे पर स्थित
  • लौह-युग स्थल

  • नागौर जिले में स्थित
  • इसे औजारों का कस्बा भी कहा जाता है

4. इस्वाल

  • उदयपुर जिले में स्थित
  • औद्योगिक कस्बा (प्राचीन समय में लौह मील के कारण ऐसा कहा जाता है)

5. गरदरा

  • बुंदी जिले में स्थित
  • प्राचीन भारत की चट्टानी कलाकृति पाई जाती है।

6. जोधपुर

  • जयपुर जिले में सबा नदी के किनारे पर।
