13th India-UAE Joint Commission Meeting held virtually

On August 17, 2020, India and UAE held their 13th Joint Commission Meeting virtually.

The five sub-committees from India and UAE participated in the meeting. This included the following

  • Economic, Trade and Investment Cooperation
  • Defence and Security Cooperation
  • Education, Culture and Youth Cooperation
  • Consular and Community Affairs Cooperation
  • Overview and High-level Exchanges

The countries also discussed on economic and social impacts of COVID-19. Also, during the meet, India sought investments from UAE in areas such as renewable energy, defence, airports, ports, highways. Infrastructure.

Also, India and UAE agreed to hold the next joint session in Abu Dhabi in 2021.

Finance Ministerial Meet

On the sidelines of India-UAE Joint Commission Meeting, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman held a bilateral meeting with her UAE counterpart. The minister has sought for Rs 111 trillion of investment from UAE for the National Infrastructure Pipeline projects.

India has identified 7,000 projects between the years 2020 and 2025.

During the meet, the leaders agreed to work together in aligning interests of India and UAE in several international forums such as G20 and International Telecommunication Union.

India-UAE Trade

The bilateral trade between India and UAE was 60 billion UAE in 2019-20. This has made UAE the third largest trading partner of India after China and US. Also, UAE is the second largest export destination for India.

India-UAE Cooperation

The Cooperation between India and UAE strengthened after PM Modi visited UAE in 2015. This was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to UAE after 24 years. This renewed the interests of the countries under Link West Policy.

Link West Policy

The policy was introduced by PM Modi in 2014-15. The policy resulted in increased interaction with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The following are the nine-point agenda of Look West Policy

  • The first is an independent coverage to the region.
  • The second is commitment is omnidirectional engagement. This includes interests in midle east. Under the policy, India does not take sides between Arab and Israel or Sunni and Shia or Kabul and Islamabad, etc.
  • India shall extend its outreach to all the countries in the middle east through bilateral visits.
  • The fourth is to make India a potent force among the western neighbours
  • The fifth is centrality of Pakistan. Normalization of relations with Pakistan is a key to successful Look West Policy.
  • Enduring stability in Pakistan
  • Seventh is to accelerate economic integration between India and Gulf Cooperation council
  • The eight is defence diplomacy
  • Coping with the changes inside the Gulf Territory.
