Bodo Accord- Bodoland Territorial Area District

The accord signed is the third agreement signed in 27 years. The first was signed with All Bodo Students Union in 1993 and the second was signed with the Bodo Liberation Tigers in 2003. The third agreement led to the formation of Bodoland Territorial Council under the sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The BTC now administrates 4 districts in Assam namely Chirang, Kokrajhar, Baska and Udalguri. These areas are called the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts.

 

Magh Bihu festival celebrated in Assam

On January 15, 2020 Magh Bihu, an auspicious harvest festival is being celebrated in Assam. Magh Bihu falls in the local month of ‘Magh’ during mid-january. It is also called ‘Bhogali Bihu’ or ‘Maghor Bihu’ as it is celebrated with community feasts after the annual harvest takes place.

 

Key Points:

  1. People began the day by gathering at the temple and offered prayers, beat up the drums and walk around the bonfire.
  2. The highlight of this festival is the food, which is made from the abundance of grains after the harvest.
  3. The night before ‘Magh Bihu’ is called ‘Uruka’ meaning the night of feasts.
  4. The villagers make bamboo huts called ‘Bhelghor’ or community kitchen where they begin with the preparations for the festival.

Eight States finalized Agriculture Export Policy by the Government of India

On January 5, 2020, As per Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), eight states namely Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Nagaland, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Punjab, and Karnataka finalized an action plan for Agriculture Export Policy (AEP) to enhance exports.

 

Key Points:

i. Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) ensures the involvement for states in AEP.

Ii.A MoU was signed with the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) to include co-operatives for active role in AEP. Over 800 farmer’s producer organizations were signed the agreement.

  1. The product clusters selected are Jalandhar, Punjab (Potato), Sangli, Maharashtra (Grapes), Salem, Tamil Nadu (Poultry products), Theni, Tamil Nadu (Banana), Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh (Mango), Indore, Madhya Pradesh (Onion), Jodhpur, Rajasthan (Isabgol) and Chikkaballapur, Karnataka (Rose Onion).
  2. Under the guidance of APEDA, states are operating a market intelligence cell.

V. APEDA launched the Farmer connect portal on its website to interact with exporters.

About Agriculture Export Policy:

  1. Agriculture Export Policy was approved by the Union Cabinet in 2018.
  2. It aims to increase the potential of Indian agriculture to make India a global power in agriculture.
  3. This policy also helps the government in achieving the target of doubling the farmer’s income from 30 billion USD to 60 billion USD by 2022.

Centre & Assam govt signed tripartite agreement with the banned NDFB

On January 27, 2020 Govt. of India has signed a tripartite agreement with the representatives of the

Banned National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) organisation and Government of Assam at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The pact was signed to boost peace in the Northeastern state of Assam. The agreement would fulfill political and economic demands besides safeguarding the language and culture of the Bodo community people. Agreement signing: The agreement was signed by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, four factions of the NDFB, All Bodo Students’ Union(ABSU), Joint Secretary of Home Ministry Satyendra Garg and Assam Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna in presence of Union Minister of Home Affairs(MoHA) Shri Amit Shah.
