GoI launches “Mausam Application” to Forecast Weather

On July 27, 2020, Union Minister of Earth Sciences Dr Harsh Vardhan launched a mobile application that will provide city-wise weather forecasts and warnings. The application has been named “Mausam”.

The application was designed and developed by International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM). The application will provide information such as humidity, temperature, wind speed, direction for around 200 cities. The information in the application is to be updated 8 times a day.

The application will also provide three hourly warnings about the local weather phenomena. It will also provide forecast for the next seven days for around 450 cities in the country. Also, the application will provide weather information for the past 24 hours.

Colour Coded alerts:

The “Mausam Application” will issue colour coded alerts twice a day up to five days to warn people ahead of dangerous weather. The colour coded alerts include red, orange and yellow.

Nowcast Service of the App:

The Mausam Application provides services such as “Nowcast”. The Nowcast service gives hourly warnings of localised weather phenomena for around 800 stations.

Background:

India currently needs twice the current budget to increase observational networks, procure new computing resources and replace old ships in order to strengthen weather monitoring systems.
