History of Medieval India by Satish Chandra: The Main examination of UPSC is designed to test a candidate’s academic expertise and the ability to present his/her knowledge in a consistent manner. The second phase of the Civil Services Examination – the Main exam tests candidates of their in-depth knowledge. The Main exam is descriptive in nature and has 9 papers. Out of these 9 papers, 7 are considered for final ranking. These 7 papers are of 250 marks each.

The UPSC Mains or CSE (Main) pattern was revised in 2015. As per the revised pattern, the UPSC Mains 2020 will comprise nine theory papers (essay descriptive type). Out of the nine papers, only seven will be counted for merit ranking. Candidates also have to choose one optional subject for UPSC Mains. The maximum marks for the UPSC Mains exam are 1750 (7 papers * 250 marks each). All papers are of three-hour duration.

The Civil Services Examination is a nationwide competitive examination in India conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to various Civil Services of the Government of India, including the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, and Indian Police Service. The Preliminary Exam (Prelims) is the first stage of UPSC Civil Services Exam. This exam is objective in nature (answers are to be marked in an OMR sheet).

Every year, UPSC conducts Civil Services Examination for various services such as IAS, IPS, IFS, etc; the competitive examination comprises three successive stages:

  1. Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination (Objective Type) for the selection of candidates for Main Examination;
  2. Civil Services (Main) Examination (Written) for the selection of candidates for the personality test or Interview and
  3. Civil Services Interview (Personality Test) for various Services and posts.

The Preliminary Examination consists of two compulsory Papers of 200 marks each.

  1. The General Studies Paper-I of preliminary exam is a General studies paper that consists of 100 questions and is counted for merit.
  2. The General Studies Paper-II of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.
