India Imposes Import Restrictions on Color TV Sets

Following a ban on popular Chinese applications, the Indian Government has moved the import of Color TV sets from free to restricted. India imports the majority of TV sets from China. This move by the government is aimed to promote PM Modi’s vision of “Vocal for Local” which will boost domestic manufacturing and balance the trade deficit the country is currently facing against China.

What does the new move mean?

The restriction announced recently by the DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) states that the import policy of the Color TV sets has been amended from free category to the restricted category. Importers of those items which is in the restricted category have to seek a license from the commerce ministry of DGFT for imports.

Impact on Business

In the last financial year, Colour television sets worth $781 million were imported in the country most of which came from Vietnam and China of $428 million and $292 million respectively. After the recent move taken by government Vietnam and China will be the country suffering majorly from this trade.  However, the end buyer is not likely to suffer any change in price as most of the manufacturing company have their manufacturing units in India.

Other Major Advancements

After the recent India-China border clash at Galwan Valley, the government has taken very strict move. Railway and road tenders secured by Chinese Companies are cancelled. The Centre has also imposed a ban on numerous Chinese apps including very popular video-sharing app “Tik-Tok” on national security ground. Before this, the Union Power Minister disallowed the import of power equipment from China and Pakistan giving the reason of cybersecurity threats.
