Objective:

  • To achieve the objective of making available quality generic medicines at affordable prices to all, through exclusive outlets Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras.
  • ‘Jan Aushadhi Scheme’ was launched by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India in November 2008 across the county.

Mission:

  • Create awareness among public regarding generic medicines.
  • Create demand for generic medicines through medical practioners.
  • Create awareness through education and awareness program that high price need not be synonymous with high quality.
  • Provide all the commonly used generic medicines covering all the therapeutic groups.
  • Provide all the related health care products too under the scheme.

Salient Features :

  • The Scheme is operated by government agencies as well as by private entrepreneurs:
  • The incentive provided to the Kendra owners has been enhanced from existing Rs. 2.50 lakh to up to Rs. 5.00 lakh to be given @ 15% of monthly purchases made, subject to a ceiling
    of Rs. 15,000/- per month.
  • One-time incentive of Rs. 2.00 lakh is to be provided for furniture & fixtures and computer & printers to the PMBJP Kendras opened in North-Eastern States, Himalayan areas, Island
    territories and backward areas mentioned as aspirational district by NITI Aayog or opened by women entrepreneur, Divyang, SCs& STs.
  • Prices of the Jan Aushadhi medicines are 50%-90% less than that of branded medicines prices in the open market.
  • Medicines are procured only from World Health Organization – Good Manufacturing Practices (WHO-GMP) certified suppliers for ensuring the quality of the products.
  • Each batch of drug is tested at laboratories accredited by ‘National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories’ (NABL) for ensuring best quality.

Why was the scheme launched ?

  • To make quality medicines available at affordable prices for all.
  • To reduce out of pocket expenses in healthcare and end vicious cycle of poverty.
  • To popularize generic medicines among the masses and dispel the prevalent notion that low priced generic medicines are of inferior quality or are less effective.
  • To generate employment by engaging individual entrepreneurs in the opening of PMBJP Kendras.
  • To promote Aatamnirbharta [self­r eliance] among women, Divyang, SC, & ST entrepreneur’s – Special Incentive of amount of Rs. 2 lakh in addition to normal incentives is extended.

1.What is Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana ?

  • ‘Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan aushadhi Pariyojana’ is a campaign launched by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Govt. Of India, to provide quality medicines at affordable prices to the masses through special kendra’s known as Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra.
  • Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra (PMBJK) have been set up to provide generic drugs, which are available at lesser prices but are equivalent in quality and efficacy as expensive branded drugs.

2. What is a Generic Medicine?

  • Generic medicines are unbranded medicines which are equally safe and having the same efficacy as that of branded medicines in terms of their therapeutic value.
  • The prices of generic medicines are much cheaper than their branded equivalent.

3. What is BPPI?

  • BPPI (Bureau of Pharma Public Sector Undertakings of India) has been established under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Govt. of India, with the support of all the CPSUs for co-coordinating procurement, supply and marketing of generic drugs through Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra (PMBJK).

4. How the quality, safety and efficacy of medicines are ensured?

  • The quality, safety and efficacy of medicines are ensured by getting each batch of medicines procured from CPSUs as well as private suppliers tested from NABL approved laboratories and conforming to the required standards before the same are supplied to Super stockists /PMBJK’s from the Warehouse of BPPI.

5. Are generic drugs as effective as branded ones?

  • The generic drugs are having the same efficacy and therapeutic value as that of branded medicines.

6. How do generic medicines benefit the patients?

  • The cost of generic medicines having the same quality as that of branded medicines is much cheaper than their branded equivalent.
